– CLASS SIZES: small (a lot of personal attention)
– CLASS OPTIONS: online, in-person, intensive, semi-intensive (I appreciated having so many options for learning that I could work into my schedule)
– TEACHER: always prepared, professional, willing to answer questions you have; the city of Zurich offers a service you can use wherein they discuss what language learning options might be right for you. They communicated that Sprachschule Schneider has very skills teachers – something I agree with after my experience with the A2 courses there.
– LEARNING MATERIALS: I really enjoyed using the Schritte Neu Plus workbooks that have references to Swiss Cantons / cities / traditions. I learned high German and skipped the dialect sections of the book but thought the coursebook format was engaging.

My experience with Sprachschule Schneider and my German teacher have been great. Previously, I had been practicing German with language learning apps Duolingo, Rosetta Stone, Babbel (mostly Duolingo). I moved from the US to Zurich for a rotation with work, and while learning German in Zurich was by no means a requirement for me, I really wanted to improve my German skills from a quality of life perspective (many of my coworkers are native German speakers). I tested into A2 and started the online semi-intensive group course (two days a week, the hours per day depend on how many students are in the class). For all of my A2 sessions, I had at most one other student in my course (though for many sessions, I was the only student). I have heard that some classes are a little larger depending on how many people sign up, but the class size was a positive for me. This was personalized teaching with a lot of time spent speaking. Coming from the language learning apps, I felt much more comfortable reading and writing than hearing and speaking before taking courses through Sprachschule Schneider – the first few classes were very tough for me in that I was not used to using German in speech (but I had built up vocabulary and basic grammar rules with self-practice). After the first few sessions, I began to feel much more comfortable – so do not be discouraged if the first few lessons are intimidating (e.g. I did not know how to say sentence, page, example, paragraph in German before starting the course). I enjoyed the online course setup because I could log on while still at the office without having to commute to a physical classroom location – when out of town or traveling, I could still do my lessons. The teacher was flexible though if I could not make class on a specific day. If there was a word that I was not familiar with, I could Google Translate it real-time. There are drawbacks of online learning, but for me, the pros / convenience outweighed the cons. Doing this course and having regular sessions with the teacher helped me level up my listening and speaking skills in a way that the language learning applications never could. I still use the language learning apps daily on my commute to and from work, and I view the language learning apps as being a good supplement to my German classes with Sprachschule Schneider because I do not have time for the intensive courses – if I have free time and want to study more, I can use the language learning apps. If you do not have the opportunity to speak German frequently otherwise and are considering taking courses through Sprachschule Schneider versus simply using the language learning apps on your phone, I would strongly recommend that you take courses (if not intensive, semi-intensive works).

Die Lehrerin weiss genau, wie man Kinder motiviert und wie man auch komplizierte Zusammenhänge einfach und verständlich erklärt. Sie unterrichtet auf eine interessante, humorvolle Art, die bei Kindern sehr gut ankommt. Sie setzt alt bewährte und auch moderne Lehrtechniken parallel ein und gestaltet den Unterricht sehr interaktiv und abwechslungsreich. Die Lehrerin ist stets hoch motiviert und man spürt ihre Leidenschaft für die Französische Sprache förmlich. Trotz ihrem Enthusiasmus hat sie jedoch die notwendige Geduld mit den Kindern neue Elemente so lange einzuüben, bis sie wirklich sitzen und in der Anwendung von den Kindern fehlerfrei und sinngemäss verwendet werden. Sie ist nicht nur Lehrerin sondern auch Coach und Mentor zugleich und gelegentlich sogar Kameradin. Für sehr gute Leistungen werden die Kinder oft mit einer mitgebrachten Überraschung belohnt. Die Lehrerin ist sehr einfühlsam und gleichzeitig auch sehr streng. Sie duldet keine Halbheiten und realisiert sofort ob jemand etwas nicht kann weil er es nicht versteht oder weil er nicht geübt hat. Wir sind mit der Sprachschule Schneider sehr zufrieden und können sie vorbehaltlos empfehlen.

We had the chance to send our daughter to learn with Miss Eva Hagn.
Even though our daughter has 4,5 years old and very energetic, she managed to teach her German and had the patience to work with her. She gave her on every less new games and materials on the paper to exercise at home.
All the administrative stuff was done fast. They offered us a tailored course with 30 minutes instead of 45 because of the age of our daughter.
